Devlog 1

I decided to release a beta build of the game I've been working on, it was really so that I could see what other people think about what I've been working on. This is a really early build and most of what's inside is likely to change once I find an artist or something. I've been working in it for about 5 days now.

Things I like so far:

The movement: I like how the movement is feeling at this point, especially the dashes. The camera movement also feels pretty nice, although in the future I will be adding a proper menu with options to change the sensitivity.

The Follower: That little light thing that follows you around and lets you see around you, I think it looks pretty neat and adds a certain gameplay aspect.

The Shooting: After some research and some testing I found that raycasting from the center of the screen to get a point of impact and then rotating the bullet to face that point and applying the force made it pretty nice to shoot. There's also some randomness added so that the bullets don't fly straight to the target every time.

Things I don't like so far:

The enemies: They're just boxes with a fur material that I didn't do a very good job of applying. Their AI is simple and they can fly through walls.

The Sounds: I've been playing with the 3d sound setting in unity to make the objects in this world seem more alive. I'm not sure that I've got it exactly where it needs to be so I'll be tweaking that more later on. Also the levels of the music and sound effects may need some tweaking, and I'm kind of on the fence about whether I should keep the overall game music since it may be a little distracting when you are trying to hear for enemies and powerups.

The lighting: It's a little dark but I would like to make that part of the gameplay too. Having to rely on the follower to light up your environment sounds kind of cool to me.

The Overall Game Play: It's pretty boring at this point, but the purpose of this beta build is to just test the level generation, movement, sound, and lighting. There are some small things like powerups and the follower to mess around with, but this is really just a foundation for a game that is going to be formed as I keep working on it. Of course, I hope to get feedback from people who play it and I'm happy to hear ideas and thoughts about what is already in the game.

So in conclusion, this is just the first step in a long road that I hope will lead to a game that is played and enjoyed by many many people.
